Citizenship
For more than ten years, Tompkins Learning Partners has provided educational support for those seeking US citizenship through the Office for New Americans. TLP partners with Catholic Charities of Tompkins/Tioga Counties, which provides immigration services support while TLP tutors help students prepare for the citizenship interview. Tutors are specially trained and receive ongoing support. Students learn the civics content, work on English skills, and participate in practice interviews. Tutors help them understand what to expect when they arrive for the interview and in the communications before and after the interview. Last year, 37 students were preparing to seek US citizenship; for some students, this process can take more than one year.
Tutors and staff members typically attend a student’s Naturalization Ceremony and celebrate with the student when they attain citizenship!
