Adult Basic Education (ABE)

Adults ages 18 and up work with tutors one-to-one or in small groups to improve reading, writing, math, or basic technology skills. Students’ levels range from beginning to intermediate. They come with a variety of goals, including gaining employment-related literacy skills, learning to use math in real-world applications, strengthening reading skills to work with their children or grandchildren, pursuing educational goals, obtaining a driver’s permit, obtaining health literacy, improving writing skills, learning to complete forms and navigate online portals, engaging in community activities, and more.

Many of our Adult Basic Education students have not had the opportunity to obtain a high school diploma. Others completed high school but have gaps in their education or want to strengthen their skills in one or more areas. When students have a goal of pursuing a high school equivalency diploma, they may opt to work with a TLP tutor to prepare for the GED subject tests or the National External Diploma Program (NEDP) exam. Sometimes these students are enrolled in a traditional class and seek a tutor for additional support or personalized instruction. Other students need the flexibility of one-to-one tutoring due to variable work schedules, transportation or childcare challenges, or other constraints.
