TLP Tutors are…
Do you want to share your skills to make a tangible impact in the life of someone in your community? Do you enjoy connecting with and learning from others? If so, tutoring through Tompkins Learning Partners may be for you!
- Interested in working with adult learners to help them reach their educational goals
- Curious, reflective, and open to exploring new teaching strategies
- Lifelong learners eager to participate in ongoing training
- Compassionate, patient, and respectful in their interpersonal relationships
- Able to make at least a one-year commitment with a predictable schedule
- 18 years of age or older
Additional Information
Tutor Training and Support
New tutors complete approximately 15 hours of initial training.
Tutors are expected to participate in ongoing training each year. Ongoing training is offered in person at TLP and online, with topics tailored to tutor-student needs and goals.
Staff are available to provide support, problem solving, and to check in on a regular basis.
The Details
Tutors and students meet in a variety of public places, including:
- Meeting rooms at the TLP office, a warm and inviting environment
- Libraries
- Community Centers
- Wegmans
- Coffee shops
Tutor Responsibilities Include:
- Working with students to establish, meet, and revise short- and long-term goals
- Meet with individual students or a small group for a minimum of two hours per week
- Prepare lessons and materials in advance (resources are available at TLP)
- Attend ongoing training
- Communicate effectively with students and with TLP, including submission of a monthly tutor report
