Tompkins Learning Partners (TLP) is accepting applications for the position of Part-Time Adult Literacy Instructor. The Adult Literacy Instructor will work in coordination with and will be supervised by TLP’s Program Director to ensure that TLP provides tailored, individualized instruction that helps adult learners meet their literacy, language, and personal goals.
Position Title: Part-Time Adult Literacy Instructor
Reports to: Program Director and Executive Director
Status: Part-Time – averaging 18 hours per week

Compensation: $23 – $24/hour, depending on experience
Duties to be performed will include but are not limited to:
- Implement small group and one-on-one instruction for beginning level learners in both the English Language Learning (ELL) and Adult Basic Education (ABE) programs.
- Conduct short-term diagnostic placements with beginning level students in both the Adult Basic Education and English Language Learning programs and assist Program Coordinators in transitioning these students to working with a volunteer tutor
- Collaborate with program staff to train tutors in best practices for working with beginning literacy level students
- Provide curriculum consultation and on-going mentorship for volunteer tutors working with beginning students
- Track and monitor student outcomes and achievements by submitting monthly reports
- Provide some case management for the students you instruct, in collaboration with the ABE and ELL Program Coordinators
- Meet regularly with the Program Director and other TLP staff
- Assist program staff with outreach efforts such as tutor recruitment and tabling.
A strong candidate will:
- Support our mission to help adults meet their personal literacy goals, free of charge, by improving their ability to read, write, speak English, and use math and computers
- Respect adult learners with diverse life experiences, cultural backgrounds, and educational histories
- Have experience in education, human services, tutoring and/or working with vulnerable populations
- Possess a bachelor’s degree (required) in education, human services, or a related field; experience in adult education, special education, tutoring, or ESL/TESOL is preferred
- Have knowledge of community organizations and resources and networking skills
- Have good written and verbal communication skills and be highly organized
- Demonstrate flexibility, accessibility, and sensitivity
- Enjoy working as part of a team
In addition to daytime hours, this position will require occasional evening and weekend work.
