Tompkins Learning Partners is extremely grateful for the 2025 Women Building Community grant from the City Federation of Women’s Organizations. Through this support of Tompkins Learning Partners’ Empowering Women through Literacy and Language Instruction project, TLP will be able to sustain a third part-time staff teacher position while seeking sustainable, long-term funding for this position.
Tompkins Learning Partners’ staff teachers bring a wealth of professional training and experience, equipping them to tailor instruction to adult learners with little-to-no experience in the English language and who may have had limited access to formal education in their first language. These students often have other barriers to accessing education, including varying work schedules, as well as limited transportation and childcare, and our teachers are able to flexibly and creatively establish a tutoring schedule that works.
The impact of this grant on the women served will ripple out through their families and community, as they read to their children and grandchildren, help their children with homework, access and navigate health care and social service programs, provide financial support for their households, and become translators and volunteers within our community.
